
Student Worker - Student Learning Assistant
Job Description
Position Summary
The Academic Support & Student Success Department is recruiting for several part-time student workers to work as Student Learning Assistants beginning in the Fall 2025 semester. This position is responsible for assisting Victoria College students in the subject areas of math, English and/or humanities, and/or science at the Victoria College Main Campus Learning Lab.
Duties & Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide subject-specific content assistance to walk-in and virtual students during scheduled hours
- Create a professional and welcoming environment
- Use active listening and questioning strategies
- Participate in professional development activities
- Utilize resources, feedback, and reflection to improve sessions and practice
- Maintain a positive attitude and provide constructive feedback to students
- Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment and materials
- Refer students to other campus and community resources as needed
- Maintain CRLA training certification requirements and standards
- Complete appropriate documentation of sessions in a timely fashion (within 24 hours of sessions) and correctly note grant-funded students in reports
- Communicate with Learning Lab Director and check email regularly
- Adhere to schedule guidelines
- Follow all FERPA guidelines
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Learning Lab Coordinator
Qualifications
- Two (2) recommendations from faculty members at VC
- Enrollment in a minimum of 6 credit hours in the Fall and Spring semesters and 3 credit hours in the summer
- Good academic (minimum GPA of 3.0) and disciplinary standing
- An A or B in the subject content of student assistance
- Excellent presentation and communication skills
- Ability to follow through on responsibilities
- Proficiency with MS Word, MS Office Outlook, and Excel
- Maintain positive, courteous, and tactful manner when working with college administration, faculty, students, and the public
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle controls, keypads, etc. Will be required to sit and reach with hands and arms as well as, sit, stand, and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds while loading event supplies, booth equipment, office supplies, and paper. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, some color vision, and the ability to adjust focus from documents to computer screen. Hearing light to moderate sound is required for this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
