Plumbing Technicians perform repair and preventive maintenance duties of plumbing systems and associated fixtures.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Perform repair and preventive maintenance work on various plumbing fixtures and systems.

2. Respond to and repair emergency plumbing problems including water pipe, faucet, water/sewer issues, natural gas or ceiling leaks.

3. Estimate, schedule and work to completion both routine and special projects.

4. Maintain tools, equipment and material inventories.

5. Coordinate work schedules with building occupants/department personnel.

6. Meet and assist various contractors in the coordination of project work.

7. Communicate with building departments or personnel regarding water, waste, or natural gas distribution interruptions. Provide temporary services as needed.

8. Adhere to all safety procedures including lock-out/tag-out procedures, MSDS safety warnings, required personal protection equipment, and OSHA requirements. Advises supervisor of any unsafe work conditions encountered and/or conditions found in equipment that could pose hazards to others.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• High school diploma or GED

• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

• 4+ years of trades experience with emphasis on industrial, commercial, and institutional plumbing application

• Proficient written communication and record keeping skills

• Experience in basic carpentry, wall/floor tile, ceiling, and roof construction

• Strong mechanical ability

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Plumbing system maintenance, repairs, operational principles and control strategies.

• Common federal, state, and local codes and regulations pertaining to maintenance and operation of plumbing systems and equipment.

• Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades including lock-out tag-out, fall protection and use of personal protective equipment.


Skills and Abilities:

• Read and comprehend work orders, preventive maintenance tasks, check lists, equipment operations and maintenance manuals, specifications, material safety data sheets, equipment prints and diagrams, sketches, floor plans, and controls sequences of operations.

• Calibrate, maintain, and install mixing valve and water heater controls. Perform troubleshooting of natural gas and electric water heater and food service booster heater controls. Use multimeter to perform testing of, fuses, heating elements, thermostats, temperature sensors, and other electrical components associated with domestic water systems.

• Operate computer programs used in tracking and executing preventive maintenance work and programs. Offer suggestions for improvements to work control automation strategies to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the repair and maintenance program in the field.

• Ability to work in cramped spaces for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks in spaces with temperature extremes.

• Ability to work at heights using ladders, scaffolding and aerial work platforms such as Scissor lifts, and telescoping push around lifts.

• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds. Must also have the ability to stand, climb stairs, bend and kneel for extended periods of time.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Associate’s degree
• Participation in technical training courses involving domestic water systems
