Essential Job Duties

The focus of the Assistant Director is to facilitate academic, cultural, and social development enrichment activities for high school participants as well as providing supervision of the academic support program staff for the Upward Bound Programs. The position also entails providing participants with an educational environment conducive to obtaining an high school diploma and assisting with preparation to gain entry into a post-secondary institution.

The Assistant Director will be responsible for the following:
  • Supervising academic program services for the Upward Bound Programs
  • Supervising Upward Bound personnel including the academic coordinator and program coordinator
  • Securing and preparing data for all Upward Bound Programs documenting in the student database in preparation for the Department of Education Annual Performance Report
  • Providing program services insuring personal, vocational, and academic guidance for participants
  • Providing academic assistance to specified students designated as a part of the rigorous curriculum
  • Planning cultural and educational activities for participants
  • Visiting students at assigned schools to provide academic support
  • Maintaining accurate files on participant contacts
  • Assessing the needs for each participant
  • Assisting in the recruitment of eligible UB participants
  • Supervising resource personnel (drivers, teachers, tutors, etc.)
  • Coordinating and supervising major programming functions
  • Coordinating and supervising workshops
  • Establishing and implementing weekly tutorials
  • Coordinating Saturday Academic Academies

Other Responsibilities

  • Position requires occasional travel to schools across the state.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities. 

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Masters Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Science, or equivalent field required
  • At least two years of experience in academic skill development, counseling and working with different student populations

Other Required Qualifications

  • Staff supervisory experience required
  • Student advising experience at the high school level or college admissions counseling
  • Three years of experience in academic skill and curriculum development
  • Database software proficiency
  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office Word, Publisher, and Power Point (or similar software)
