General Function
Lead the Future of Campus Safety at Central Piedmont.
Central Piedmont Community College is seeking a visionary, seasoned, and community-minded Chief of Police to build and lead a newly created Campus Police and Public Safety department. This is a pivotal opportunity to shape a department from the ground up setting the foundation for safety, trust and a student-centered policing model at one of North Carolina's largest community colleges.

Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President of Safety and Security, the Chief of Police will be responsible for managing administrative and operational aspects of the college's police department. This role involves maintaining an environment of safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Chief of Police oversees most aspects of law enforcement, police emergency response, and crime prevention on all Central Piedmont campuses and centers, fostering a safe, secure, and inclusive environment in alignment with the college's mission and values.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and direction to the campus police department.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop Central Piedmont police officers and police support staff.
- Assist in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and best practices for safety and security on all Central Piedmont campuses and centers.
- Manage the department’s budget, resources, and equipment.
- The enforcement of laws, regulations, and college policies on all Central Piedmont campuses and centers.
- Help with crime prevention, investigation, and resolution.
- Help coordinate emergency response planning and preparedness, including drills and training.
- Collaborate with local law enforcement and emergency services.
- Build positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Promote community-oriented policing and transparency within the department.
- Assist with conducting safety awareness programs and initiatives.
- Serve as a liaison between the police department and the Executive Director of College Security & Public Safety.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including Clery Act reporting.
- Prepare and submit required reports and documentation to college administration and regulatory agencies.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents, investigations, and departmental activities.
Minimum Requirements and Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Certification as a law enforcement officer in the state of North Carolina; Basic Law Enforcement Training (NCBLET).
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse campus populations.
Preferred Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Experience in higher education or campus law enforcement.
- Advanced law enforcement training (i.e., FBI National Academy).
- Familiarity with Title IX, Clery Act, and other relevant regulations and statutes.
- Strong knowledge of campus public safety issues, emergency management and response, and security and law enforcement best practices.

Working Conditions:
- Must be available for on-call duty and emergency response as needed.
- Requires a combination of office work and active fieldwork, including walking and standing for extended periods.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule inclusive of days, nights, weekends, and holidays, to include extended hours.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- Moderate physical activity; requires handling of average-weight objects, standing or walking for extended periods of time in less-than-optimal terrain and weather conditions, and other related activities.
