The Frost Institute for Chemistry and Molecular Science (FICMS) seeks to recruit an outstanding Scientist trained to perform basic research in materials science using a ThermoFisher Spectra 300 transmission electron microscope. In addition to the Spectra electron microscope, the Molecular Electron Microscopy Core (MEMC) in the Materials Science Research Center (MSRC) is equipped with a Titan Krios G4, a Glacios 2, a Talos 200C and an Aquilos for correlated light and electron microscopy and focused ion beam milling to generate cellular and tissue specimens for cryotomography.
Other responsibilities include (1) Sample preparation for analysis by techniques like slicing, polishing, and deposition to ensure optimal imaging conditions for electron microscopy and electron diffraction, (2) Collection of high-resolution images and performance of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), (3) Data processing and interpretation of large datasets using image analysis software packages to examine crystal structure, grain boundaries, elemental composition, strain distribution, and other material properties, (4) Critical thinking skills to troubleshoot experimental challenges and interpret complex data.

2. Authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent applications.
3. Assists in the development of training materials for research staff.
4. Plans experiments and records and analyzes findings.
5. Prepares research proposals and funding applications.
6. Ensures that all activities are in compliance with applicable quality and regulatory standards.
7. Maintains current knowledge of relevant scientific and technical developments.
8. Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
9. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Doctorate degree - Philosophy (PhD) required.
Experience:
Minimum 10 years of relevant experience required.
